One of my favorite characters of all time has to be Ludwig Bemelmans’ Madeline. With her gorgeous crop of red hair, sense of wonder and matter-of-fact fearlessness, I always thought she was the little girl all of us wanted to be.
I used to watch the animated show during the summers when I was younger, but more recently I picked up “Madeline and The Gypsies” (above) during my college days.
My friend and I were visiting the monthly book sale at the tiny local Ilsley Library and when among the random books I found this on sale for 25 cents. Endearing illustrations and another Madeline adventure? Sold.
PS - What if Madeline were a witch a la Harry Potter? One artist imagines…
